Well, I better write a bit of something for the month of February before I forget.
The official Nicaraguan school year has begun. My first class was last week. Most of the time, schools will not begin until two weeks after the official start date because they are stuck making their calendar/classes for the teachers. It is a complicated process more like a puzzle written out by hand on paper. Fortunately we as volunteers have taught the principals of our schools a basic computer program that organizes classes and associates them with teachers. It is another puzzle but more simple. It saves an enormous amount of time for the school system when planning their schedules for the year. My first day of class was visited by my boss. Luckily for me I had already co-planned with my teachers. We had a plan and everything ran smooth. I only helped co-teach two more classes last week before I left to Matagalpa for the weekend.
This past weekend was Valentines Day. The day before was my mother's birthday. I made sure to call her and wish her a happy birthday. Fortunately for me my grandparents were at my parents house so I was able to talk to them as well. Valentines Day in Matagalpa is a day of several celebrations. First off, we have "El Dia de Amor y Amistad" your typical Valentines Day. So whatever a "typical" Valentines day is for you is much what it is like in Matagalpa...everyone goes out with their partner, girlfriend, significant other, opposite sex, or friend. On top of this day is Matagalpa's birthday. Last weekend we celebrated 153 years since the birth of this wonderful city. It has been through quite a bit, but has progressed to a thriving city in Nicaragua. To be honest, it has been my favorite city to visit during my free time. It can be relaxing yet at the same time can be a place where one go hiking, explore the coffee forests in Selva Negra, and visit the waterfall at the Eco Lodge in Cascada Blanca.
Coffee is the best here. Don't miss out on a great cup of Matagalpa Coffee if you pass through.
Right now my Nica 61 group is in the capital, Managua at the office. We have our week of COS conference (to be continued...)
