Over the past several years I have opened my ears to new and various kinds of music. I feel music has a life of its own. When I am feeling down, music gives me life and a sense of inspiration. One could talk for days about music and the effects it has on the mind, body, and soul; however, I do not have sufficient knowledge to discuss such information. I do know that the vibe, rhythm, harmony, tone, pitch, etc all work together to produce a sound beautiful enough to send a chill down your spine leaving the hairs on your arm standing as straight as a soldier at attention. Not many other sounds can leave you feeling like this, but you are aware that this sound has affected you in a positive way whether it be a happy or sad sound.
Another way I love to use music is when I am running. I use different sounds to provide me energy or "motivation"!
Everyone has a different reason to listen to different songs. Thus, everyone is affected differently by different songs. One song could make me smile and happy while the same song could make "you" sad and full of tears. Our brain at its finest. I feel the brain is able analyze songs then send signals to produce a feeling or emotion.
Regardless of how we analyze different types of music, I think we can teach ourselves to truly listen to the music. Whether the music has words or no words, there is a message in every song. The artist wouldn't have produced it if there was not a significant meaning or message embedded.
I write this because music exists for a reason! Everyone utilizes music differently and everyone responds to music differently. I always thought it was weird when people criticized me or whomever for the music they listened to. It's a way of life, I agree, but I also feel that people should open their hearts and experience different types of music. I have done the same while living in Nicaragua. As a kid, I would have never caught myself listening to Spanish music. Number one, I simply did not understand what was being said.
I have found that with patience, I am able to enjoy the music of Nicaragua. I try to understand that the music here gives life to this culture, just as the music I listen to gives me life. Then there is the medium of music that brings cultures together! There are songs, very popular songs, that have reached people across the world! Although the lyrics are in English, the music still produces an emotion and a reaction in people of a different culture. Through music we can come together. We can be united through the power of music.
Next time you through your earphones on try out some music from a different country. Be open minded yet respectful. Listen. Learn. Most of all, live!
